U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has an Op-Ed piece in Sunday’s Washington Post, attempting to set the stage before Tuesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.
In it, Gonzales takes a defensive tone. All you have to do is read the title of his piece (“Nothing Improper”) to know what will follow: an effort by the country’s chief prosecutor to portray himself as blameless in the U.S. Attorney firings controversy.
And how does he intend to set the record straight? By attempting to convince America the he can effectively investigate his own conduct by having the Justice Department’s Inspector General peform an “independent investigation” of his conduct, and that of others,
“so that Congress and the American people can be 100 percent assured of what I believe and what the investigation thus far has shown: that nothing improper occurred.” (emphasis added)
In other words, have the DOJ’s Inspector General issue a report showing that Gonzales is a squeeky clean, highly ethical and lawful prosecutor.
